7th October 2007 - SCARBOROUGH CROWNED CHAMPIONS! A wonderful team display from Scarborough Swimming Club saw them top the Ridings Premier League when they empathically won their home gala at the Indoor pool last night. All the team put in a fine performance which saw them reach a commanding position after 8 events, on 27 points, South Holderness 23 points, Kingfishers 20 points and Thirsk bringing up the rear with 10 points. The gala saw the return of ex Scarborough Swimmer JJ Wilkinson who swam for the Kingfisher team. He was however, to make no impression on a rampant team performance who have now become the first Premier League Champions with one league gala remaining at South Holderness on the 20th October. The lead was never in danger throughout the gala and focus now was on who would come 2nd in this enthralling gala. At the halfway stage, South Holderness held a narrow lead over Kingfishers with 63 and 61 points respectively. Scarborough were by this time out of sight with 76 points. With a few good swims coming from the final relays, it was Kingfishers, last year's division 1 champions, who finally secured second place with 127 points.
This was a polished performance from the Young Scarborough Squad and the whole team can be proud of their part in a magnificent gala and to totally eradicate the disappointments of last year. Well done to the CHAMPIONS!

Final Gala Result:

1st Scarborough 150pts, 2nd Kingfishers 127pts, 3rd South Holderness 121pts, 4th Thirsk 78pts

1st Scarborough SC 450pts 12pts
2nd Kingfishers SC 364pts 08pts
3rd South Holderness SC 360pts 07pts
4th Thirsk SC 260pts 03pts

Scarborough are now crowned Premier League Champions with Thirsk relegated to the 1st Division. The club would also like to thank everyone involved especially officials and helpers who made the gala most enjoyable. The final gala will be at South Holderness on the 20th October - 1730 for 1800 start.

5th October 2007 - Most of the latest news with regard to the Pocklington League can be found on October's information page With the club having completed all of its galas, the most likely outcome for us in the league is to finish in 4th place - one above the relegation slot, with South Holderness the most likely relegation candidates. The big gala is tomorrow night, 6th October, when we go to the Indoor pool for the 3rd Ridings Premiership League gala when we swim in Our home gala. I will be starter for this eagerly awaited gala in which the club could be crowned the champions of the new Premiership League.

The Ridings records pages still require to be updated to reflect all the earlier galas, but this update will now take place after tomorrow's gala - Come on Scarborough Swimming Club!

Adam Harvey picked up some medals the recently held Regional Masters which took place in Harrogate on the 22nd September. She how he got on here.

Just in case you have missed it, the club is to hold a Valentines Gala on the 9th February 2008 in addition to our regular A & B gala in June of next year. Read about it here and obtain all information and entry forms.

27th August 2007 - The refunds to clubs for the lost second day of the Scarborough A & B Gala hosted back in June has began on the 24th August. Refunds will be made to the person who submitted the original entries and cheques will be made payable to the club concerned. Any outstanding medals and certificates will also be sent out at this time.

The club is considering to hold another 'one day' gala as a direct replacement for the lost day, and a proposed date of the 9th February 2008 is under consideration. Any firm details will appear on this website in due course. There was some pre-exposure to the event which appeared in the Scarborough Evening News.

Four of our swimmers have been swimming in the National Swimming Championships Held at Ponds Forge Sheffield.

16th July 2007 - It was with some deep regret that over the weekend that Scarborough Swimming Club learned of the death of Scottish Open Water Coach, Eian Prentice, who was known and well respected by many of the club's Open Water swimmers and their family, and often brought the Scottish Open Water Squad to take part in the Wykeham and North Bay Swims each year, which were part of the Grand Prix Circuit. Our condolences go to his wife and young family.

15th July 2007 - The club has been very busy once again, where swimmers have been competing in the North Eastern Regional Open Water Championships held at Wykeham Lake, and organised by your very own club. The club also tasted action in the form of the North Yorkshire Swimming League, where it stormed to victory for the first time in three starts.

It was our home gala this time and we greeted teams from Ryedale, Thirsk White Horse and Derwent Valley Devils. 31 of the 49 events were won, with another 10 events where we came 2nd, and 36 personal best times set by the young team. The atmosphere in the Indoor Pool was electric, where a vast abundance of sportsmanship between the competing teams was on display, and was there for all to see - Just as the sport of swimming should be - good clean fun.

After the first 12 events, the host team had taken a 6 point lead over 2nd placed Thirsk with the points tally being; Ryedale and Derwent 21pts, Thirsk 35pts and Scarborough on 41pts. The points difference just got bigger come the halfway point and it looked like Scarborough were on their way to their first victory in the North Yorkshire League. A full report will appear shortly but for now it would be suffice to say that it was an excellent performance from all club swimmers with the final result being:

1st) Scarborough 168pts, 2nd) Thirsk 140pts, 3rd) Ryedale 88pts, 4th) Derwent Valley 81pts

ASANER Annual Open Water Swimming Championships incorporating British Grand Prix - 14th July 2007

There was an abundance of medals won by our club swimmers in the open water event in which a dozen medals were taken home by the intrepid swimmers who did exceptionally well to battle the very un-summer like weather conditions. Due to the extremely powerful wind, the organisors decided to cut the event down from 5Km to 3.75Km (3 Laps of the Lake) The two favourites of the male and female events, James Leitch (City of Glasgow) and Erica Brown (Chesterfield) are no strangers to Wykeham, and our very own swimmers certainly gave a excellent account of themselves and indeed, Julie Owen upset the form book with a great win in the Ladies race when she forged ahead early in the race to hold off the challenge of both Brown and club mate Sarah Roberts. Julie eventually winning in 48.23, taking both the Yorkshire and Regional Gold medal and the Grand Prix's 22 points with Erica Brown taking the Silver medal in 50.02 and Sarah Roberts the Bronze Regional and Yorkshire Silver medal in 53.07 The men's race was an exciting affair with the club's Adam Harvey taking an early lead to take pole position for over half the race. James Leitch started to attack Adam at the 2Km mark, and eventually took the lead to take the Gold medal in 46.36, with Adam Harvey winning the Regional and Yorkshire Gold medals to finish in 2nd place in a time of 47.42, and collecting 19 Grand Prix points along the way.

Another winner was David Mort taking the Silver Regional medal and Yorkshire Gold in the Junior Male 1.25Km event coming home in 2nd place in 20.37, and with newcomer Tom Venner doing exceptionally well to win the Bronze Regional and Yorkshire Silver medal finishing in 3rd place with a time of 24.40. Emma Couch did very well against the elements and claimed both Regional and Yorkshire Bronze medals when she came 3rd in the Junior Female 1.25Km race in a time of 19.29.

8th July 2007 - Scarborough Swimming Club enjoy stunning Ridings Premiership League Victory - The club enjoyed a sensational victory at Thirsk last evening (7th July) when it comprehensively defeated League 1 Champions Kingfishers by a resounding 29 points, almost the same number of points difference as the last gala where the gap was a mammoth 34 points. With all swimmers swimming to the best of their ability, the result did not look in jeopardy, and the win puts the club firmly at the top of the league and look set to become the first Premiership league champions and with the club's home gala still to look forward to later in the year. Thirsk, the host club, increased their points tally but still finished at the wrong end of the points. A full report will appear soon and the result was as follows:
1) Scarborough 146pts, 2)Kingfishers 117pts, 3)South Holderness 113pts, 4)Thirsk White Horse 101pts

22nd June 2007 - Important Information regarding Scarborough A & B Gala 2007- After an extraordinary committee meeting, it has been agreed to refund to clubs all entry fees that were charged to clubs for entries taken for the cancelled day, Sunday. As you are obviously aware, the power failure was down to some pretty foul weather but the club and its members want to see our friends again next year, and therefore a refund will be arranged shortly.

Open Water News coming shortly!

19th June 2007 - The report found here for the A & B gala will appear soon in the Scarborough Evening News, who also took a number of Photos on Saturday. Results are available too! They are in PDF so you will need Adobe Acrobat to read them. Next week, Microsoft Word documents will appear where it is hoped to show the split timings from Saturday's events.
The fault still remains at the pool as we speak, but power is being provided by a generator whilst NEDL carry out the necessary repair work.

RESULTS

Visitors please to note that the date advertised in the programme for next year's event was incorrect and the correct dates are the 14th and 15th June 2008. The event is likely to be advertised and entry into the competition will probably open in November.

17th June 2007 - Scarborough A & B Gala - 2nd Day abandoned due to major electrical fault! - It is with deep regret that the Club had to make the decision to abandon the 2nd day's action due to a underground cabling fault. Scarborough Borough Council staff informed us at 0700 that the Indoor pool was without power to run the air-conditioning and pool circulation pumps, and due to health and Safety, could not allow the event to take place.
It was hoped to have NEDL, the electrical contractors to effect a repair quick enough to allow a delayed start a few hours later, but this was not possible, and it was with some sorrow that the club announced to the waiting crowd that no swimming was possible.
The Saturday went extremely well and the club felt that all swimmers were having a great time, and it is a shame that we couldn't make the second day such a success as the first.

There were a number of clubs attending for the first time, and we do sincerely hope that this problem has not put you off attending our gala or enjoying the hospitality of Scarborough again next year. If any club has any queries, please do not hesitate in contacting the club secretary, Mrs Sue Taylor on 01723 367714. We look forward in seeing you all again in 2008.

The results from Saturday will appear on this website as soon as possible.

The report from last year's club championships can be found here.

16th January 2007 - The club held its first Committee meeting at the Crescent Hotel last evening. All new members were welcomed to the meeting by the Chairman and Club President, Sam Greetham.

One piece of news which may interest some was that contrary to what we thought, the Atlantis pool will shut this year, and will probably be dismantled in March or April. We now have to look for a new venue for our annual BBQ. It looks like our old North Bay Pool has finally had its day!
