Gala 1 - Scarborough Indoor Pool - 6th May 2006
Scarborough Swimming Club opened its 2006 Pocklington League campaign at the Indoor pool with a close defeat by Kingston Upon Hull. Two disqualifications early in the Gala probably denied the club a victory it richly deserved. It was apparent from early on that the Gala winners would come from either the host club or Hull team.
Whilst promotion may prove to be difficult this year, the team does look strong, and relegation is most certainly not on the menu. Whilst to lose the gala, there were many positives that can be taken from the event, where many personal best swims achieved by the Scarborough team. The team were to finish in first or second place in no fewer than thirty-four of the forty-eight events swam. The eleven and under boys got the club off to a great start by winning their 4 x 25m medley relay. The team, Ben Moverley, David Couch, Sam Broadley and Ben Robson complete their victory in 1:18.10. Another win was to come during the Boys Open 4 x 50m medley, when the team consisting of James Sowersby, Paul Hargreaves, Adam Harvey and Laurence Mills easily won in 1:59.52. The girls followed suit with another easy victory during their 4x50m medley relay. A time of 2:16.30 was produced by Sarah Roberts, Gemma Hunter, Julie Owen and Emily Lucas.
Emma Couch won her two individual events, taking the Girls 15 and under 100m Butterfly in 1:13.93 and again in the 100m Freestyle, coming home in 1:05.09. Paul Hargreaves also took maximum points from his two events namely the Boys Open 100m Freestyle in 54.31 and the 100m Breaststroke winning in 1:10.23. Laurence Mills continued with double victories when he produced a 57.46 during the 15 and under 100m Freestyle and a time of 1:14.57 was to follow in the 100m breaststroke. Another pair of victories from Julie Owen kept the pressure on Hull where she easily won the Girls Open Freestyle in 1:02.10 and the 100m Butterfly was also secured in a time of 1:08.04.
Gareth Mills won the 13 and under 100m butterfly in 1:08.39 and was on schedule to win the 100m breaststroke when a disqualification denied him the victory. Ben Moverley, was another to fall victim to a disqualification, but bounced back to seal victory in the boys 11 and under 100m Freestyle in 1:13.31. David Couch earned the club four valuable points when he beat off the competition to win the 11 and under 100m Breaststroke in 1:46.07. Hannah Broadley also took maximum points from the girls 13 and under 100m Butterfly in a time of 1:20.45. Ross Glegg had a great swim to win the boys 15 and under 100m backstroke in 1:06.29 and Sarah Roberts was also in top form to fend off the opposition to win the girls Open 100m Breaststroke in 1:22.33. Adam Harvey also took the maximum points from the boys open 100m Butterfly in 1:03.14.Further victories were to come along during the final quarter of the gala when the boys 11 and under team, Ben Moverley, David Couch, Sam Broadley and Ben Robson won in 1:06.00 as did the boys 13 and under team. The 4 x 50m Freestyle team, Gareth Mills, Tom Venner, Robert Harvey and David Mort, were pushed all the way by Hull, but they were to prevail with an excellent time of 2:06.68. The open girls relay team of Sarah Roberts, Gemma Hunter, Julie Owen and Emily Lucas also did enough for the maximum points in winning the 4 x 50m Freestyle in 2:00.78.
Other team members participating in their first Pocklington Gala and worthy of a special mention were Eleanor Eves and Harriet Ritchie.
The team travel to Adwick on the 24th June for the second gala.
