Division 2 - Gala 1 - Scarborough Indoor Pool - 12th February 2005

Scarborough Swimming Club recently opened their campaign in Division 2 of the Pocklington Times Swimming League Scarborough, last year's champions, were denied promotion last year, due to the formation of Division 4 of the Pocklington leagues, and the restructuring of the league clubs, the club have a further season at least in Division 2.
What a rollercoaster ride it was too. The club got off to a poor start, with only one win in the opening eight Medley Relay events. A win for the Boys open 4 x 50m team of James Sowersby, Paul Hargreaves, Alistair Mills and Aaron Yeoman, who sealed a narrow victory in 1:59.96.

Victories came in the girls 15/u 100m Butterfly in the form of Emma Couch, who won in 1:18.84, followed quickly by Paul Hargreaves in the Boys Open 100m freestyle won in a personal best time of 56.63. A hatful of wins for the Mills family trio; Gareth Mills winning the 13/u boys 100m Butterfly in 1:13.51, with Laurence Mills taking the 15/u boys 100m freestyle in 1:00.15 and Alistair Mills cruising to victory in the open 100m backstroke, recording 1:04.57.

Wins, however, were hard to come by, and at the halfway stage the club was still trailing in 4th place with 56pts. However, with 4th place staring them in the face, the team rallied superbly during the latter stages of the gala, but even after 40 events, with 8 remaining, the club found itself chasing the rest on 94pts, with the other clubs, South Axholme with 95pts, and Adwick with 96pts, and clear winners Askern with 111pts.

Further Individual wins came from Laurence,Gareth and Alistair Mills, when they won the 15/u Backstroke,1:12.37,13/u 100m backstroke,1:17.12 and open 100m Butterfly in 1:02.95 respectively. Paul Hargreaves also found top form to win the 100m Breaststroke by the narrowest of margins in 1:09.55. The most popular victory of the gala, which was roared on by the large group of spectators, was saved for ten year old Rebecca Cox, who raced to seal a memorable win in the 11/u 100m freestyle, where she swam a personal best time of 1:26.62, and earn the club another valuable four points towards security.

A number of wins from the freestyle relay teams also improved the teams chances of avoiding last place. The boys 13/u team of Gareth Mills, Liam Thraves, Tom Venner and David Mort took all the points in 2:15.62, as did the 15/u boys freestyle team of Gareth and Laurence Mills, Adam Broadley and Matthew Naylor, who won in 2:01.09. The girls did their bit too, with the 15/u freestyle team; Emily Lucas, Alix Pettitt, Emma Couch and Natalie Couch bringing home the goods in 2:10.35.

Throughout the gala, there were a number of personal best times for Ben Moverley, Catherine Orchard, Liam Thraves, Natasha Hunter, Adam Broadley, David Couch, Hannah Thraves, Hannah Broadley and Jessica Couch.

Thanks to these important victories secured in the latter stages of the gala, the team managed to take the runners-up slot by the narrowest of margins, a position hardly thought possible during the gala.

The team will be back in Pocklington league action again in a few days time, and it is hoped that the points won't be so hard to come by next time.

Gala Result:

1st Askern Spa 132pts, 2nd Scarborough 116pts, 3rd Adwick 114pts, 4th South Axholme 111pts

Division 2 - Gala 2 - Adwick Leisure Centre - 19th February 2005

Scarborough Swimming Club took full advantage of the situation in their second Pocklington League League Division Two meet within a week, to snatch an unlikely but much welcomed victory over their adversaries, when they travelled to Adwick, Doncaster. South Axholme paid the ultimate price when their club was involved in two galas on the same day, when they finished in 4th place, and now look firm candidates for relegation to Division Three. Both Askern Spa and Adwick were unable to place swimmers in all age groups, which allowed Scarborough to seize the initiative, and win the gala by a slender one point winning margin. Scarborough, however, were also without a number of swimmers, but were able to put out a strong team which was competitive in each event swam.

Fourteen events had passed before the club registered it's first victory; Emma Couch won the girls 15/u 100m Butterfly in some style in a time of 1:18.53. The Mills' brothers continued to supply high quality finishes to secure a succession of wins; Gareth Mills winning the boys 13/u 100m Butterfly in a time of 1:14.15, and Laurence Mills hitting top form to win the 15/u 100m freestyle in 59.76 with older brother Alistair Mills taking the open 100m backstroke in 1:06.94. Jessica Couch grabbed four points when she won the girls 11/u 50m Butterfly in 42.69.

Laurence Mills returned to the water to win once again during the 15/u 100m backstroke in 1:10.29. Tom Venner hit a personal best on his way to winning the boys 11/u 100m freestyle in 1:18.52.

At the halfway stage, a victory for Scarborough looked must unlikely when Askern Spa were leading with 68pts and both Scarborough and Adwick in joint second with 62pts. South Axholme trailing with 55pts.

It was left to Gareth and Alistair Mills to win the final Individual event points when they both won their events with some ease; Gareth winning the 13/u 100m backstroke in 1:17.09 and Alistair having a comfortable win during the open 100m Butterfly, winning in 1:02.69.

The town's only success during the relay events came from the boys 11/u 4 x 25m freestyle team, consisting of Ben Moverley, Tom Venner, Ben Robson and David Couch. The event was won in 1:12.62.

Although wins were of a premium, the club rarely came home in 4th place, and such was the nature of the gala, it was always going to be a close run affair as to who would eventually win. The outcome of the gala came down to the wire, with the last event finally deciding the final placings.

It came as a pleasant surprise to the club's coaching staff, when Scarborough Swimming Club immerged as winners, beating last year's relegated Division One Club, Askern Spa by one point.

In securing Victory, a number of swimmers achieved personal best times; Ben Moverley, Natasha Hunter, Ben Robson, David Mort, Natalie Couch, Tom Venner and Rebecca Cox.

Gala Result:

1st Scarborough 123pts, 2nd Askern 122pts, 3rd Adwick 116pts, 4th South Axholme 101pts

Division 2 - Gala 3 - Gainsborough - 16th April 2005

A long trip to Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, took Scarborough Swimming club to their third Division Two Pocklington Times league meet of the current campaign.

With a number of team members missing, the pressure was always on to obtain a result from this gala. Although event wins were in short supply, many of the young swimmers achieved good personal best times.

Emma Couch won the girls 15/u 100m Butterfly in 1:20.11, with Gareth Mills also taking maximum points from the boys 13/u 100m Butterfly, winning in 1:17.81, and achieved the same during the boys 13/u Backstroke, 1:17.39. Jessica Couch touched home to claim first place during the girls 11/u 50m Butterfly, with a personal best time of 39.32. Laurence Mills cruised home to win the 15/u boys 100m Backstroke in 1:17.39. Julie Owen, recently returning to competition, picked up where she left off and recorded a personal best time in her victory as she won the girls open 100m butterfly in 1:05.54. There was one solitary victory during the relay events; the Boys 15/u 4 x 50m Freestyle team, Gareth Mills, 31.61, Matthew Naylor, 31.50, Adam Broadley, 31.37 and Laurence Mills, 26.97 coasted home to win in 2:01.50.

Personal best times were achieved by; John Cusworth, Hannah Broadley, Catherine Orchard, Liam and Hannah Thraves, Ben Robson, Ben Moverley, Matthew Naylor, David Couch and James Sowersby.

The runaway Gala leaders, Askern Spa, watched to see who would come second, with all three of the other clubs in with a chance. To continue with their promotion drive, Scarborough needed to come second, and this indeed, did seem a likely prospect until a number of controversial refereeing decisions went against them, which resulted in two lost points, and with them, promotion was lost for this season.

Gala Result:

1st Askern Spa 140 pts, 2nd South Axholme 111 pts, 3rd Scarborough 110 pts, 4th Adwick 108 pts.
