Yorkshire overseas training camp - Palacio de San Miguel Olympic 50 meter indoor pool Torremolinos, Costa del Sol, Spain

“I was well pleased to receive the news of my selection back in November to join the Yorkshire squad “

I was sent a log book to record the training sessions before I left for camp.  It made me think about what I wanted to achieve.  My log book explained the focus of the camp would be on aerobic maintenance, pacing, stroke rate, skills and technique and attention to detail such as turns, streamlining and dolphin kicks out of the starts and turns.

I was most looking forward to working on my butterfly as 200 Fly is my favourite event and the first event I would face at the Yorkshire Championships in Leeds the weekend I got back.

I worked really hard in training over Christmas and leading up to the camp.   Sam was really pleased with my effort and assured me I could handle what ever they gave me to do. The time passed really quickly and before I realised it was time for me to go to Leeds to meet the squad.  There were 16 of us altogether, Andrew Burns of York City Baths and James Morren on Leeds were the other two my age.   I had raced against them before and was looking forward to training with them.

I had four training days at a Palacio de San Miguel Olympic 50 meter indoor pool in Torremolinos.  I trained twice a day in the heated indoor pool.  Steve Cox of the City of Sheffield was the head coach for the camp.  Diane Binns, the Harrogate coach was his Assistant.  The training was quite intensive and aerobic based, very similar to Sam’s program (he was right, I managed just fine) I led my lane during some of the sessions.  I did lots of fun exercised my favourite was the quick reaction game and the rockets.  During training they were strict about fluid intake we had to down one and a half litres a session.  I was bursting for the loo all the way back to the hotel.

In between the training sessions we completed our log books, rested, ate and prepared for the next session. During the free time I lived in the games room and played pool with the rest of the squad.  We had 4 meeting times through out the day to report for training or meals Vicki and Ophelia, our team managers made sure we were on time to training

We were all encouraged to keep our diet healthy but that wasn't easy with the food served up at the hotel.  To begin with we were living of chips, bread and yogurts our team managers tried to encourage us to try some of the Spanish food, the meat looked really dodgy but after trying some I decided it tasted quite good.

Yorkshire Junior Squad in Spain 2006click on for a bigger picture. Gareth is bottom right.

The camp went really quickly I was looking forward to getting back to Leeds.  We didn't arrive there until 12.30 in the morning.  The warm up for the Yorkshires was only 7 hours away.  I had to get some sleep before the busy weekend ahead.  It was a good Yorkshire Champs for me.  Gold in the 800 Free. Silver in the 200 Fly, Bronze in the 100 Fly, 200 I.M, and 200 Back

It was fun and interesting travelling and training with different coaches and swimmers.  It was a great experience for me to be part of the Yorkshire Squad in Spain.

Scarborough A & B Grade Gala - Scarborough Indoor Pool - 17/18th June 2006

All the hard work and preparation finally paid off as Scarborough Swimming Club hosted it's Annual A & B Grade Gala at the Indoor pool where three hundred swimmers from sixteen clubs came together in the warm Scarborough sunshine.
The host club provided the biggest contingent of swimmers with thirty-five competing, with many more local swimmers coming from Scarborough Kingfishers. The club is indebted to Councillor Herbert Tindall, Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough, who came along and presented some of the medals during the event.

There were many successes for the club during the gala, where many Gold, Silver and Bronze medals were won in both the 'A' and 'B' grades as well as 'Skins' competition winners, along with team relay wins and for all the swimmers taking part, personal best times, and in a number of instances, 'speeding tickets' were issued to swimmers swimming faster than the allotted cut off time for each grade.

The swimmers were well looked after with well stocked food and chilled drinks stalls along with ice cream and other goodies. A swim shop was also on hand to get that special pair of goggles or a new costume. The packed balcony containing the mums and dads provided the vocal support which was in evidence throughout the sixty four action packed events.

One swimmer to do well was 17 year old Paul Hargreaves who battled his way through four hard heats in the 'skins' event to win the cash award, and also set three personal best times in winning four gold medals, the 15+ yrs 100m Breaststroke in 1:05.60, along with the 15+ yrs 100m Butterfly in 1:00.42,adding the Boys 15+ yrs 100m Freestyle in an excellent 54.73, and rounded off the Gold medal feast with another personal best time during the 100m Backstroke in which he set 1:00.83. A bronze medal was also added to his tally when he received the bronze medal during the 15+ yrs 200m Individual Medley.

Seventeen year old Sarah Roberts had a most rewarding gala, where she too fought extremely hard during the last two heats of the 'Skins' to get to the final where she out shone old Rival Gemma Bell, Ryedale, by winning the final 50m Breaststroke in 38:01 with Bell coming in 41:37 to win the well deserved cash prize. Not content with the 'skins,' she produced four other personal best times when she added three Gold medals to her portfolio. The 15+ yrs 100m Breaststroke fell in 1:20.55, as did the 15+ yrs 200m Individual Medley in 2:34.94 and completed her winnings with the Gold in the 15+ yrs 100m Freestyle, winning in style in 1:04.12.

Thirteen year old Gareth Mills was also in the medals, winning the 13/14yrs 100m Butterfly in a personal best time of 1:07.41. It could have easily been another gold during the 13/14 yrs 100m Breaststroke where a speeding ticket was awarded for an excellent personal best time of 1:24.01. He was however, to add two silver medals to his collection. The 13/14 yrs 100m Backstroke silver came in 1:12.76, and his 1:03.66 was good enough for the silver medal during the 13/14 yrs 100m Freestyle. The 13/14 yrs 200m Individual Medley gave him his only bronze medal of the gala where a time of 2:39.02 sufficed.

Ross Glegg, 13, so nearly won four gold's but in the end had to settle for two. During the 13/14 yrs 100m Backstroke, he won in personal best time of 1:06.06, with the 13/14 yrs 200m Individual Medley providing the ideal event to slice off ten seconds from his old time to record 1:22.72 for the Gold medal. Both the 13/14yrs 100m Butterfly and the Boys 13/14 yrs 100m Freestyle resulted in speeding tickets with two massive personal best times to record 1:14.48 and 59:41 respectively.

Fifteen year old Laurence Mills produced four personal best times when he took gold during 15+ yrs 200m Individual Medley in a time of 2:19.13. A silver followed in the 15+ yrs 100m Breaststroke with 1:12.18, and for good measure added a further silver medal during the Boys 15 yrs 100m Backstroke in 1:03.90. During the extremely competitive 15+ yrs 100m Freestyle, his personal best time of 57:06 gave him 4th place but he was back on the medal trail during the 15+ yrs 100m Butterfly, where a bronze medal was secured with a personal best of 1:04.14.
David Couch, ten, swam very well to make personal best times during all his events, and was fortunate to receive the Gold medal during the 11yrs & u 100m Individual Medley, shaving off six seconds to record 1:29.01. Three bronze medals came during the 11 yrs & u 50m Freestyle, 34:18, the 50m Backstroke, 41:27, and again in the 50m Breaststroke swam in 48.26.
Eleven year old Jessica Couch won a wonderful 11 yrs & u 50m Breaststroke in 42:97 which was a personal best. Again, all her efforts throughout the gala were her best times. Two silver medals came along in the 11 yrs & u 50m Butterfly recording a 38:86 and in the 50m Backstroke with a time of 38:01. A speeding ticket followed during the 100m Individual Medley, knocking five seconds from her old time to 1:22.04. A gold medal and a speeding ticket was won by Robert Harvey, 13, during the 13/14 yrs 100m Backstroke, hacking off a full eight seconds from his previous marker to a new low of 1:16.91, and an equally impressive eight seconds was taken off his time during the 100m Freestyle finishing with a speeding ticket in 1:08.09.

Another impressive portfolio of five personal best times were achieved by eleven year old Rebecca Cox. She was rewarded with the Gold medal in the 11 yrs & u 50m Butterfly with a time of 39:92. A bronze medal was to follow in the 'B' Graded 50m Breaststroke coming home in 50:66. For her efforts knocking five seconds from her personal best she received a speeding ticket in the 'B' Graded 100m Individual Medley in a great time of 1:28.24. She was just outside the medals too in the 50m Freestyle and again in the 50m Backstroke, both 'A' graded events, recording 34:34 and 39:12 respectively.
The gala continued with many impressive performances from the young swimmers and ten year old Hannah Thraves did not disappoint when she won the 'B' Grade 11yrs & u 50m Backstroke in a personal best of 45:37, and also produced two other personal bests. Eleven year old Cana Machen had a great gala, again all five of her events clocking up personal bests. Again, she took gold in the 'B' Graded 11 yrs & u 50m Breaststroke, won in 47:87 and two 'A' graded bronze medals were received during the 50m Butterfly, 39:70 and the 50m Freestyle, 34:33. She also collected a speeding ticket in the 100m Individual Medley, 1:29.25 - six seconds off her previous marker. Hannah Broadley, 12, did exceptional well to battle her way through the Junior 'skins' event to make the final and just lost out in the final to Tadcaster's Aimee Milner, 37:09, with Hannah recording 38:59. She did however, receive the runner's up cash award. Two 'A' graded silver medals came along, and as in previous swimmers, massive personal best times were recorded. A 1:19.20 was recorded for the 12yrs 100m Individual Medley, and during the 100m Butterfly she came home in 1:29.19. A full nine second improvement was reserved for the 'B' Graded 100m Breaststroke where she was timed in 1:35.53 to win the bronze medal. A silver medal came during the 'B' graded 100m Backstroke in 1:23.46.

Emma Couch, 15, did well to set three personal bests and was rewarded with the 'B' Grade silver medal during the 15+ yrs 200m Individual Medley finishing in 2:48.39. She was just outside the medals in 4th during the 'A' Graded 15+ yrs 100m Butterfly set in 1:14.63.

Ten year old Ben Moverley was probably the unluckiest swimmer not to win a medal during three excellent swims which saw him awarded with three speeding tickets during the 11 yrs & u 50m Freestyle, 33:26, the
50m Backstroke, 37:64 and again in the 100m Individual Medley, 1:25.08. All in personal best times.

Other swimmers to win medals at both 'A' and 'B' grade levels were fifteen year old Emily Lucas during the 15+ yrs 100m Breaststroke in 1:26.63 and the 100m Backstroke, 1:17.79.

Two 'A' Graded bronze medals cam the way of Adam Broadley; 13/14yrs 100m Butterfly, 1:11.58, the 100m Freestyle, 1:05.26, with a 'B' grade silver medal coming from a personal best of 1:13.21 for the 100m Backstroke.

Other 'B' Graded medal winners were eleven year old Aaron Pattison doing exceptionally well to win four silver and one bronze medal with three personal best achievements. Pattison's medals were 11 yrs & u 50m Butterfly in 49:34, the 50m Freestyle, 39:83, and the 50m Backstroke timed at 47:57 and the 100m Individual Medley, 1:37.44.

Thirteen year old Liam Thraves was another who won three 'B' graded silver medals - three in personal best times - the events were the 13/14 yrs 200m Individual Medley, 3:05.07, and the 100m Butterfly, 1:29.71 and again during the 100m Freestyle, 1:10.66.

Oliver Ritchie, 14, also won two silver medals during the 'B' graded 200m Individual Medley, 3:13.35 and the 100m Breaststroke, 1:31.29, which probably produced the biggest improvement of twelve seconds.

Marc Slack, 14, continued in winning ways with two 'B' Graded silver medals won in his best time during the 13/14yrs 100m Butterfly, 1:20.82 and again for the 100m Freestyle, in 1:09.45.

Thirteen year old Natasha Hunter was the welcome recipient of a 'B' Graded medal during the 13/14 yrs 100m Breaststroke, took in a personal best time of 1:32.19.

David Mort, 12, was unlucky not to win a medal when he was placed 4th during the 12 yrs 100m Freestyle in a new low time of 1:12.97. A speeding ticket followed during the 100m Backstroke when he again lowered his old time to 1:21.52 - a full seven seconds removed.

Even though they were outside the medals, the following swimmers all achieved personal best times; Eleanor Eves, Aimee Haynes, Chelsey Glegg, Ben Orchard, Catherine Orchard, Harriet Ritchie, Connor Mainprize, Hayley Goodall, Fiona Bird, Georgina Rhodes, Hannah Couch,Gemma Hunter and James Sowersby.

Adam went on to win bronze in the 200m Butterfly a couple of hours later. Saturday saw some improvement in the water temperature but not in the pool environs!! Although not medalling, Mark was well pleased with the times set for the 100 and 50m freestyle as they came off minimal training due to exams.
