Latest News

28th January 2009 - A very belated 'Happy New Year' to all our readers. Due to one thing or another, I've not been able to update the web site. However, for all those who are intending to enter our 'Valentines Day Zone' Gala on February 14th, please note that the club has kept open late entries for this gala. If you club would like to send more swimmers, or indeed any club who wishes to send swimmers please obtain all details from the 'Valentine Day Zone' gala Page.

Our A & B Gala web page in June has now been updated. The page now contains the cut-off times for each event. The club apologises for any inconvenience caused.

When some fresh content becomes available, this page will continue to be updated.

15th February 2009 -Our " In the Zone" gala was held yesterday at the town's indoor pool. Swimmers attended from a number of clubs within the District; Beverley Barracudas, Bridlington, East Leeds, Askern Spa, South Axeholme Sharks, Driffield, Ryedale, Sheffield City, Kingfishers, Pocklington, City of Leeds, and of course, the hosts, Scarborough. The gala entry was not a big as expected, but those swimmers attending certainly enjoyed themselves.
The results from the gala (in microsoft word form) can be downloaded from here

Tania Exley-Moore, the club's new press officer, has forwarded the following release for the local press:

Scarborough 'In the Zone' Gala - 14th February 2009

Scarborough Swimming Club's annual Valentine's Day Gala held this weekend at the North Bay Pool raised over £150 for a Cancer Charity.  The 'In the Zone' Gala attracted over 100 swimmers and their families from as far a field as Sheffield and Doncaster. The club organised a raffle and other events during the lunch break to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness.  The spectator's gallery was a sea of colour as parents and helpers donned an array of pink outfits to mark the day and during lunch the children livened up the crowd by singing and dancing on the poolside.
Event organiser, Chris Rhodes said " The day was great and the atmosphere was electric.  This is a really popular gala because the heats are not in age groups like at most swimming meets, they are in time zones.  This means every swimmer has the same chance of winning a medal.  The kids love it because they get the chance to win prize money."

4th March 2009 - On the 21st February 2009, the club hosted a friendly gala:

SCARBOROUGH HOSTS FRIENDLY GALA

At the weekend Scarborough Swimming Club hosted a friendly swimming gala for novice swimmers from across the region. Over 200 children participated in the event and teams were entered by Bridlington, New Earswick, Ryedale and Pocklington. Swimmers ranged from 8 to 16 and the highlight of the evening was the relay events which gave the youngsters experience of the excitement of swimming as a team. The Scarborough Swimming Club team contained many young swimmers who had never swum in a competition before. There were some impressive young swimmers and Scarborough notched up a respectable 103 points. New Earswick were the evening's winners though on 186 points. Full list of fixtures as follows:

8th March 2009 - The A & B Gala which takes place in June over the 19th-21st June is now closed for entries. I will be providing a list of all clubs that have been successful in gaining entry this year.

15th March 2009 - The club has been in North Yorkshire League action on the 7th March, where there were many good performance from the young (and not so young Julie Owen!) swimmers who went along to Thirsk. The full list of individual results can be found here Small report as follows:

YOUNG SWIMMERS SHINE IN NORTH YORKSHIRE LEAGUE

Young swimmers from Scarborough Swimming Club shone in a range of individual and relay events at the North Yorkshire League gala this weekend. The event was hosted by the winning team Thirsk and Scarborough swimmers performed well against other North Yorkshire teams coming third overall.

Georgina Rhodes came to the judges' attention by swimming against much older competitors in the open races. She achieved a huge personal best in the 100m Fly where she came second. Other swimmers who were commended by the team coach for their performances and team spirit were Jordan Doubtfire and Robert Harvey.

Gala Result: TWH 162, Ryedale 121, Scarborough 118, but we won the Cannon as Thirsk were disqualified for a flier!

Another report which was spotted in the local press. A number of our swimmers will be taking part in the National Swimming trials held at Sheffield's Ponds Forge later this month (16th-22nd March) ie. starting tomorrow. See the report here:

Swimmers target more medal glory

SCARBOROUGH swimmers are aiming for another medal haul when they hit the water again in a top competition later this month. A group of the club's top performers are taking part in a national qualifying event at Sheffield on the back of a hugely successful Yorkshire Championships.
At that event in Leeds, Scarborough swimmers came away with three gold, four silver and a bronze, as well as two team medals despite tough competition against the top clubs in the county. In an outstanding performance, Laurence Mills struck gold in the men's senior 200m backstroke. In the junior section, Laurence's brother Gareth had a double triumph, with golden performances in both the 200m butterfly and the 200m freestyle.
Laurence Mills also won silver in the 200m individual medley and bronze in the 400, individual medley, while Rebecca Whaling picked up silvers in the 200m and 100m backstroke.
National qualifying times were achieved by 13-year-old Rebecca in both those events, by 15-year-old Gareth Mills in the 200m butterfly and by Ross Glegg, 16, in the 400m freestyle. Adam Burchfield and Rebecca Cox were the other swimmers to represent Scarborough, and club coach Sam Greetham said: "It was a great day and we are continuing to punch above our weight as a club and produce swimmers who can take on the best from the big Yorkshire clubs."

If you want to see who represents your club, why not have a look at the updated club officer's web page. There is some contact details there for you to contact them if required. You may wish to contact the press officer, or check your membership details. You should now be able to contact them now from the web page.

21st April 2009 - The club has been quite active once again, and the website has received a number of reports and photographs from recent swimming activity. The most recent news was the clubs victory in the recently held Premiership Ridings league meet on Saturday 18th April in Scarborough's indoor pool, where the team triumphed by over 30 points to win their first points of the season, with Kingfishers sharing second place with New Earswick and with Bridlington in 4th place. Another plus was that there were 3 records set by the club:

SCARBOROUGH SWIMMERS BREAK RIDINGS’ RECORDS

Three Ridings League swimming records were broken this weekend in one of the first galas of the season.  All Three records were broken by Scarborough Swimming Club who finished the event in a comfortable first place, 29 points ahead of rival Scarborough Club Kingfishers.

Rebecca Whaling, age 13, broke a Riding’s League record swimming the 50m Backstroke event in 32.84 seconds, but the stars of the evening were the Boys’ Open Relay team who smashed 2 records.  The swimmers (pictured from left to right), Gareth Mills, Ross Glegg, Laurence Mills and Nathan Renshaw swam the 4x50m Medley Relay in 1:49.59 and the 4x50m Freestyle Relay in 1:39.38.  Team Coach Nick Kinrade said “the boys’ swims were spectacular.  They easily out swam the other clubs and it was inspiring for our younger swimmers to see swimming of this calibre”

The event was hosted by Scarborough Swimming Club at the indoor pool and was attended by other Premier Division Clubs, Kingfishers, New Earswick and Bridlington.  The Gala is one of 5 held between March and October each year.  With Scarborough Swimming Club’s impressive victory, winning 22 out of the 48 events, they certainly look set to follow last year’s lead and finish at the top of the league.

The club also did well in the Yorkshire BAGCAT Championships:

SCARBOROUGH YOUNGSTERS SWIM TO GLORY

Scarborough Swimming Club is celebrating their recent success in the Yorkshire Championships.  20 Scarborough Swimmers ranging from ages 9 to 14 achieved qualifying times to take part in the British Age Group Championships in Sheffield last month.

The big success of the day was 10 year old Jace Cappleman who won Gold in the 50 metre Freestyle event. Coach Sarah Roberts said “to be recognized as the fastest 10 year old in Yorkshire is really something for Jace and for the club.  We are all thrilled with her achievement.  She was up against swimmers from Leeds, Sheffield, Hull and many other much bigger clubs than ours”.  Jace also came 4th in the 200m Freestyle and the 50m Breaststroke events.

Other young swimmers to beat personal records in the championships included Tammy Connor (12), Jack Colley (14), Ben Minghella (9), Melissa Cooper (10), Morgan Grunwell (9) and Emma Clapton (10).  9 year old Christopher Cook reached the finals in a number of his events and came 5th place in the 50m Freestyle.

Overall Scarborough Swimming Club came 9th out of 24 in the points table and was only beaten by much larger city clubs.  Club President Sam Greetham said “our position in the points table is testament to both the talent we have in Scarborough Swimming Club and the dedication and expertise of our coaches”.

Ridings Premier League 17th October 2009:

SCARBOROUGH SWIMMING CLUB WINS DOUBLE WHAMMY

Scarborough Swimming Club’s winning streak continues with 2 great weekends of swimming.  This weekend the club won the Ridings League for the 3rd year in a row and the previous weekend swimmers brought home a stash of medals, finalist caps and records from the Yorkshire Swimming Championships in Sheffield.

This Saturday saw a tense final gala in the Ridings League where Scarborough were battling against rival Scarborough club Kingfishers, South Holderness, New Earswick and Bridlington.  Scarborough began the gala with a one point lead but the competition seemed determined to seize the trophy.  Team Manager Steve Cappleman said “for a while it looked like South Holderness might have beaten us, but our swimmers fought hard in the second half of the gala and our open teams were unbeatable”.  Scarborough won the league with a three point lead, with South Holderness in second place and Kingfishers in third.

This was the icing on the cake for what had already been a hugely successful month in the club’s swimming history, with 3 swimmers winning national times at the Yorkshire Swimming Championships in Sheffield. Rebecca Whaling, aged 14 won a national time in the 100m Backstroke and was swiftly followed by teammates Ross Glegg (16) and Gareth Mills (16) who won national times in 100m Backstroke and 100m Butterfly.  Then all three swimmers went on to earn national times in the 200 IM.  Club coach Sam Greetham said “They swam very well at the Yorkshires and it is great that they’ve got these national times under their belts.  Rebecca’s performance was particularly impressive given that she is only 14 and was swimming in a women’s race”.

At the Yorkshire Championships Rebecca Whaling won a gold medal for her swim in the 100m Backstroke.  The other medal winner of the weekend was 11 year old Jace Cappleman who took 3rd place in the 100m Freestyle event but Scarborough swimmers were a strong presence in the finals and the following swimmers came away with the much coveted finalist caps:  Rebecca Whaling (14) 5th place 200 IM; Ross Glegg (16) 6th place 200 IM and 4th place 100m Backstroke ; Gareth Mills (16) 9th place 200 IM, 8th place 100m Freestyle, 4th place 100m Butterfly and 8th place 100m Backstroke; David Couch (13) 8th place 100m Freestyle; Jace Cappleman (11) 8th place 100m Butterfly and 8th in 200m IM; Harry Exley-Moore (9) 4th place 50m Freestyle, 10th place 50m Breaststroke and 8th place in the 50m Butterfly.

There were also some outstanding swims from other members of the club with many swimmers breaking personal records.  Other swimmers were:  Dannii Doubtfire (9), Morgan Grunwell (10), Christopher Cook (10), Zak Doubtfire (10), Emma Clapton (10),  Imogen Kinrade (10), Yuko Crawford (11), Natasha Wrightson (11), Tammy Connor (12), Chloe Pattison (12), Katie Mould (12), Jordan Doubtfire (12), Sam Broadley (12), Jack Colley (14), Rebecca Cox (14)

Scarborough A & B Gala Report - June 2009

Scarborough Swimming Club hosted their A & B Gala this weekend at the Scarborough Indoor Pool and the event attracted some of the most prestigious swimming clubs in the country. As well as home clubs Scarborough and Kingfishers, the gala was attended by 17 other clubs including City of Sheffield and Sheffield City, East Leeds, Middlesbrough, Kingston upon Hull, Grimsby Santa Marina and Barnsley. The club traveling furthest was Swans St Neots from Cambridgeshire

Over 200 swimmers took part in heats held on Friday Evening, all day Saturday and all day Sunday and local hotels were booked up for the entire weekend. Scarborough Swimming Club held a tool raffle for Father’s Day on the Sunday and a raffle and tombola on the Saturday and managed to raise in excess of their target of £500 for the children’s cancer charity Candlelighters.

Club President Sam Greetham introduced the Mayor and Mayoress, Councillor and Mrs Chatt to swimmers and gala officials on Sunday afternoon and Councillor Chatt stayed to watch a number of races. Event organiser Chris Rhodes said “It has been a remarkable weekend and one of the most successful meets that Scarborough Swimming Club has ever hosted. Our homegrown swimmers did incredibly well given that they were up against some of the top clubs in the country. In most of the events there was a Scarborough Swimming Club or a Kingfishers swimmer walking away with a medal.” A great weekend for both clubs in Scarborough.

Two Scarborough Swimmer make National Finals

After the best ever performance by team GB at the World Swimming Championships in Rome, it was the turn of the next generation of hopefuls to show their potential at the National Swimming Championships at Sheffield.

The event was held over six days at Ponds Forge International Pool and amongst those competing were Ross Glegg, (16) Gareth Mills (16)  Laurence Mills (18) and Rebecca Whaling (14) all members of Scarborough Swimming Club, between them they had qualified for an impressive 20 events.

Gareth competed in 6 events, his early morning heat swim in the 200 Butterfly secured a 10th place into the evenings final. On the same day he competed strongly in the 800 freestyle finishing just outside his best time of 8:38.80.

Any national final has its own aura of excitement and Gareth’s final 200 Butterfly was no exception. He put in a determined performance. His first 50 metres was completed in 28.25, an impressive time for Gareth’s first leg of a 200 swim. He followed this up with a 1:00.21 time after 100 meters, both personal best times, rewarding him with an astonishing 5th place finish in a lifetime best of 2:06.55.

On day two he put in a strong performance on the second leg of the 4 x 200 Freestyle team with the fastest split to be recorded by the Kingston Upon Hull quartet in 1:58.15, they finished in a credible 15th place other commendable performances followed in 400 and 1500 freestyle events.

Gareth’s final event of the 2009 championships came on day 6 in the arduous 400 Individual Medley. Gareth swam in fine form to dominate the heat on the butterfly leg turning in first place to finish on a personal best time of 4 48 53.

Ross got off to the best possible start on day one when he swam a lifetime best in the 400 metres Freestyle heats.  His time of 4.05.42 secured him a place in the evening final session.  In an electric atmosphere at night, he lowered his time again to 4.04.70 in a race won by a Canadian national swimmer.

On day three Ross produced a massive best time of 8.35.41 in the 800 metres freestyle to finish 7th in a race which saw the British age group record broken in three successive heats.

In his last race of the championships, Ross made sure he finished on a high when he swam another best time of 1.57.67 in the 200 metres freestyle.

This was only the second time that Rebecca had qualified for the Nationals, qualifying in 5 events; 50 and 100 Freestyle; 100 and 200 Backstroke and 200 Individual Medley.

On the first day she competed in the 100 Freestyle and the 200 Backstroke. She achieved a personal best time in both events and finished 26th place overall in the Backstroke in a time of 2.24.07

Over the next three days she competed in the 100 Backstroke, finishing in a personal best time of 1:07.70, the 200 Individual Medley when she took almost 3 seconds off her previously best recorded time to finish in 2.26.74; and her final event was the 50 Freestyle when she managed to gain another personal best time by just 0.2 of a second finishing in a time of 28.69.

Laurence a veteran to the age group and youth national event visited the competition in his 8th consecutive year by putting in a credible final performance of his career in the 200 Backstroke. Laurence will now take a well earned rest from the demanding training schedule he has followed for the past 10 years lead by Scarborough’s Head Coach, Sam Greetham.

As a result of their success in the National Championships Ross and Gareth have both been offered two year apprenticeships with British Swimming, following in the footsteps of Laurence who has just completed the same apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence.

28th October 2009 - I do have other material which will be displayed in the near future, and I expect to put the data above into a more chronological order.

22nd November 2009 - Details on next year's A & B Gala can be downloaded from here. We hope to build on the success of the past 14 years - Can it really be that long since we run that first gala - A gala which was greatly oversubscribed, but one that was most enjoyable. I suppose the first one will always be remembered with fondness! What can be found at the link above is the cut-off times, Gala Rules, The Gala details, and most importantly, the entry forms! The cut-off for entries will be the 30th April 2010, but like most years, the gala will be filled most certainly before that date. All clubs are courteously reminded that early entry avoids disappointment!
