SCARBOROUGH RECORD BREAKERS WIN FIRST LEAGUE GALA.
Scarborough Indoor Pool - 19th May 2007
The Premier division of the Ridings league finally got underway last Saturday at the indoor pool when Kingfishers hosted the first gala in this years competition. The league has been expanded this year into four divisions with Scarborough, Kingfishers, Thirsk White Horse and South Holderness, the most successful clubs and all previous winners of this league competing against each other four times during the year in the top division.
The gala had been eagerly anticipated because of the rivalry between the two local clubs and the very close contests last year when three of the four galas were determined by a single point. Scarborough swimming club had enjoyed a successful start to the year in other competitions and were in a confident mood and took an early lead in the gala winning four of the early medley relays. This success continued in the individual events and the freestyle relays with the club ending the evening as convincing winners from South Holderness who narrowly beat Kingfishers into second.
A total of six league records were broken on the night with five of these records going to Scarborough swimmers. Paul Hargreaves improved the Open Breaststroke record to 30.25, - an event where he has lowered the record each time during the past 3 years - and Gareth Mills improved the boys' 14/u fly record to 29.52, breaking the record set by former Scarborough swimmer Neil Parcel set back in 1994. The Scarborough girls relay team of Emily Lucas, Sarah Roberts, Julie Owen and Emma Couch improved the Open freestyle record to 1.56.67 nearly 2 seconds inside the previous best. The 14/u boys team of Gareth Mills, Robert Harvey, David Mort and Jack Colley had a double team success taking two league records which had stood since 1998, the medley was won in 2.08.64 and the freestyle in 1.54.73 both well inside previous league bests. The final record was taken by the South Holderness 10/u girls who were successful in the freestyle team event setting a new best time of 1.08.79 - a record set by Bishop Auckland, way back in 1990.
Other Individual wins for Scarborough came across all the age groups. At 10/u Sam Broadley was a double winner at freestyle and backstroke, Callum Moverley won the Breaststroke. In the same age group for the girls Chloe Pattison who swam impressively all evening was a winner in the freestyle. At 12/u Ben Moverley was another double winner at backstroke and fly with David Couch winning the Breaststroke. Cana Machen who travels from Bridlington to train with Scarborough was another impressive winner in the fly event. The 14/u age group saw Gareth Mills winning the freestyle in addition to the fly and Hannah Broadley took 1st place in the girls fly. In the Open age group Laurence Mills swam a tremendous race in the fly winning against strong competition. Julie Owen was a double winner at fly and freestyle and Sarah Roberts was a confident winner of the Breaststroke.
There was plenty of team success too, the 12/u boys of Ben Moverley, David Couch, Michael Fardoe and Sam Broadley won both medley and freestyle, the Open boys' team of Paul Hargreaves, Laurence Mills, Ross Glegg and Adam Broadley won both of their team races, and the girls Open record breaking quartet also won their medley relay.
Overall gala result - 1) Scarborough 154pts, 2) South Holderness 126pts, 3) Kingfishers 120pts, 4)Thirsk 81pts.
As promised, the results of two friendly league galas swam earlier this month are:
Scarborough Indoor Pool - 5th May 2007
Scarborough hosted their own friendly gala with a modified program in which older swimmers could compete over longer distances. As well as the host club, New Earswick, Bridlington and Driffield sent teams to the Indoor Pool on the Yorkshire Coast. Scarborough had a large number of swimmers at the pool, so had a second team, Scarborough Storm was added to allow the kids to have more swims and get more times.
The gala got off to a winning start with the Boys 13&U Medley Team leading the way with an impressive 1.19.54. This was closely followed by the Girls 9years Medley Team setting the pace in 1.37.98. There were another 14 1st places in the gala which helped to secure points for the home club.
All throughout the gala it was great to see support coming from the swimmers on poolside, and the packed balcony of spectators. This probably helped with the astonishing 90 personal best times which fell during the gala. These PB swims gave Scarborough valuable points to finish 2nd in the gala in the overall standings: 1st New Earswick 163pts, 2nd Scarborough 149pts, 3rd Bridlington 145pts, 4th Driffield 122pts, 5th Scarborough Storm 46pts.

Whitby Pool - 12th May 2007
Scarborough had their second friendly gala in as many weeks as they travelled up the coast to Whitby. Although Scarborough had a relatively small team it gave the opportunity for plenty of swims which produced a good team performance.
This gala turned out to be one of the most competitive friendly gala of the year, with many races having very exciting finishes. The seaside club rose to the challenge though and produced 11 1st places and 37 Personal Best times.
Swimmers who achieved a 1st place:
L. Goodall, M. Fardoe, R. Scarborough, B. Hoggarth, M. Grunwell, J. Cappleman, I. Kinrade, C. Foster, C. Deller, M. Ratcliffe, H. Goodall, A. Haynes.
There were a good number of fine performances from our younger swimmers, with the vast majority of them being introduced to league gala swimming for the first time.
Result:
1st New Earswick 125pts, 2nd Scarborough 93pts, 3rd Bridlington 78pts, 4th Whitby 66pts
Open Water News - Wykeham Lakes - 16th May 2007
Scarborough Swimming Club took to the freezing waters of Wykeham lakes for the first time this year on Wednesday evening. With the drizzle coming down from the grey sky only 3 hardy souls managed to take to the water; Adam Harvey, Sarah Roberts and Marc Slack. Emma Couch made a brave attempt to get in but the numbing cold of the water was too much.
In 2007, Scarborough Swimming Club is going to miss two of its top open water swimmers. James Sowersby joined the Army at the end of April to begin his training as a Technical Engineer. Aaron Yeoman moved to London and is now employed by Virgin Trains in the Capital. They will be missed by all and everyone wishes them the best of luck for the future.
The club have many of its swimmers competing in different Open Water events throughout the country and will be competing from now up until the end of August, with the first event taking place this forthcoming weekend.
Training is currently taking place down at Wykeham Lakes on a Wednesday evening at 6.30pm so if your interested why not come down to see for yourself or for further information speak to the front desk on a Thursday night.
