latest update : 25th July 2007 (Newest entries top of page)

25th July 2007 - I noticed that I never posted the results from the recently held Regional Open Water Swimming Championships held at Wykeham Lake last weekend. Results in PDF file can be found here - Senior/Junior 3.75Km/1.25Km Results

Our open water swimmers have been away to Wales over the weekend with the annual BLDSA Llyn Padarn swims, report later, and today, (25th) we hold our annual Les Rouse Championships at Wykeham. Weather not brilliant though.

15th July 2007 - It was a busy day for many of the club's members and swimmers on Saturday 14th July. During the morning and until the mid-afternoon, club swimmers and officials were out at Wykeham Lakes for the North Eastern Regional Open Water Swimming Championships. A Force 5 wind greeted both swimmers and officials alike, and everyone attending can be grateful that it at least did not rain throughout the event.
During the evening, the vast majority of those same swimmers and club officials were busy again with the Home gala of the North Yorkshire Swimming League, where we greeted teams from Ryedale, Thirsk White Horse and Derwent Valley Devils. 31 of the 49 events were won, with another 10 events where we came 2nd, and 36 personal best times set by the young team. The atmosphere in the Indoor Pool was electric, where a vast abundance of sportsmanship between the competing teams was on display, and was there for all to see - Just as the sport of swimming should be - good clean fun.

After the first 12 events, the host team had taken a 6 point lead over 2nd placed Thirsk with the points tally being; Ryedale and Derwent 21pts, Thirsk 35pts and Scarborough on 41pts. The points difference just got bigger come the halfway point and it looked like Scarborough were on their way to their first victory in the North Yorkshire League. A full report will appear shortly but for now it would be suffice to say that it was an excellent performance from all club swimmers with the final result being:

1st) Scarborough 168pts, 2nd) Thirsk 140pts, 3rd) Ryedale 88pts, 4th) Derwent Valley 81pts

ASANER Open Water Championships - 3.75Km - Wykeham Lake 14th July 2007

There was an abundance of medals won by our club swimmers in the open water event in which a dozen medals were taken home by the intrepid swimmers who did exceptionally well to battle the very un-summer like weather conditions. Due to the extremely powerful wind, the organisors decided to cut the event down from 5Km to 3.75Km (3 Laps of the Lake) The two favourites of the male and female events, James Leitch (City of Glasgow) and Erica Brown (Chesterfield) are no strangers to Wykeham, and our very own swimmers certainly gave a excellent account of themselves and indeed, Julie Owen upset the form book with a great win in the Ladies race when she forged ahead early in the race to hold off the challenge of both Brown and club mate Sarah Roberts. Julie eventually winning in 48.23, taking both the Yorkshire and Regional Gold medal and the Grand Prix's 22 points with Erica Brown taking the Silver medal in 50.02 and Sarah Roberts the Bronze Regional and Yorkshire Silver medal in 53.07 The men's race was an exciting affair with the club's Adam Harvey taking an early lead to take pole position for over half the race. James Leitch started to attack Adam at the 2Km mark, and eventually took the lead to take the Gold medal in 46.36, with Adam Harvey winning the Regional and Yorkshire Gold medals to finish in 2nd place in a time of 47.42, and collecting 19 Grand Prix points along the way.

Another winner was David Mort taking the Silver Regional medal and Yorkshire Gold in the Junior Male 1.25Km event coming home in 2nd place in 20.37, and with newcomer Tom Venner doing exceptionally well to win the Bronze Regional and Yorkshire Silver medal finishing in 3rd place with a time of 24.40. Emma Couch did very well against the elements and claimed both Regional and Yorkshire Bronze medals when she came 3rd in the Junior Female 1.25Km race in a time of 19.29.

13th July 2007 - The report for our magnificent Ridings Victory at Thirsk can be read on the Riding's Page. Don't forget, a number of our hardy open-water swimmers will be at Wykeham Lake tomorrow, competing in the Regional Open Water Championships. The weather has been very poor all week, so the conditions could well be challenging to say the least. I will be there in my capacity as the Swim Starter. Please to note that the next gala in this year's Ridings Premier competition is the Scarborough home gala at the indoor pool on Saturday October 6th.

The Ridings League Secretary has finally received all outstanding results from the gala's held so far in Division's 1-3, and the respective records pages will be updated accordingly in due course.

8th July 2007 - Emphatic Ridings Premier League Victory!

Once again, Scarborough Swimming Club have stunned the Current Division 1 Champions Kingfishers, by imposing a comprehensive defeat their way when they completely dominated the proceedings at the 2nd Premier League gala of the season which took place in Thirsk last evening. Nearly 30 clear points separating the two teams this time out. Host team, Thirsk White Horse put on a stronger showing this time out but are still rooted to the bottom of the league. The Scarborough team is currently enjoying a rich vein of form which has seen them take a stranglehold of the League, and are now set to become the first winners of the Premier Division. All the different age groups competed to the best of their ability and it is a credit to all the swimmers for their resounding victory. A full report will follow soon.

1) Scarborough 146, 2)Kingfishers 117, 3)South Holderness 113, 4)Thirsk White Horse 101.
