4th December 2007 - On the 6th December, the club celebrates its 115th Annual General Meeting at the Crescent Hotel commencing at 1930. Hopefully many club members will be present. Increases to all types of club membership will be discussed and voted on, and club President and Head Coach, Sam Greetham will no doubt tell all those assembled, of the club's many successes in 2007. Successes such as swimmers making National Times, winning Regional and Yorkshire medals, Yorkshire Schools team selection as well as winning the Premier division of the Ridings League at the first attempt. No doubt Sam will also mention other items of interest too during the course of the evening.
The club is also hosting it's annual cup and medal presentation evening on the 9th December at the Spa Hotel - Ocean Room, commencing at 1430.

The Ridings records pages have been updated to reflect the broken records that have occured during the year and the Ridings Championship Records have also been updated. Premier Division / Division 1 /Division 2 / Division 3 / Ridings Championships

10th December 2007 - The club championship report has been sent off to the Scarborough Evening News and should appear soon. It is reproduced below. Any swimmer's names not mentioned is purely unintentional and I apologise in advance but as you can imagine, there were loads of events and I've tried my best to reflect a good year's worth of club championships. Report as follows:

Club Championships 2007

Scarborough Swimming Club has had a busy time leading into Christmas when it held its annual Club Championships. In all, some 58 events took place in the main championships with distances ranging from the 1500 metres down to the 25 metres. For the first time, the club also held a Novice gala where the newest and youngest members of the club aged from 6 to 12, swam in 25m events across the four main strokes - Freestyle, Butterfly, Breaststroke and Backstroke. In all, there were over fifty swimmers competing in the novices for the first time with a further eighty taking part in the main Club Championships. During the many events, there were 15 records broken and the young swimmers set over three hundred personal best times throughout the competition.

The championships got underway with 2 records crashing at the first hurdle. 16 year old Laurence Mills cracked the eight year old 200m Freestyle record set by Matthew Kaiser (2.00.10) back in 1999 to win in 1.58.80. Ross Glegg, 15, took the silver medal in 2.03.45 and Meric Inan,15, the Bronze in a personal best of 2.05.70. Julie Owen,21, set a cracking pace and left the rest for dead in setting the new record time of 2.06.92 during the Girl's Open 200m Freestyle in a personal best time of 2.06.92. Julie had previously set the record of 2.08.69 in 2003. 19 year old Sarah Roberts claimed the silver medal in 2.19.06 with Emma Couch, 16, winning bronze in 2.28.42. Junior boy winners were Jack Colley, 2.15.29, Ben Moverley, 2.27.09 and David Couch, 2.34.13, all setting PB times. Junior Girl winners were Hannah Broadley, 2.29.77, Rebecca Cox, 2.32.42, both setting PB's, and Chloe Pattison third in 2.51.18. Meric Inan returned to winning ways when he won the Gold medal during the Open Boys 100m Butterfly in a personal best of 1.05.54, with 12 year old Ben Moverley taking the silver medal in 1.19.99 and Tom Venner the bronze in 1.27.20.
Julie Owen not content with one record, saw off the 2004 record set by Aimee Ramm (1.05.98) during the Girls Open 100m Butterfly coming home way ahead of the pack in 1.05.63. Sarah Roberts consoled herself with a personal best time of 1.13.80 to win silver and Emma Couch again taking the bronze medal in 1.16.32. Sarah was however, delighted with his gold medal in the 800m Freestyle winning in 10.01.85 with Rebecca Cox, 12, picking up the silver medal in a personal best time of 11.12.75 and Emma Couch content with the bronze medal in 11.14.75. Although outside the medals, 10 year old Coral Foster can be very proud of her personal best time 15.147.08, which is a very demanding event for one so young.
Ross Glegg won the longest event of the competition when he won the gold medal during 1500m freestyle in 18.03.34, still someone to go to overall Aaron Yeoman's 17.10.02 club championship record set in 2002.
Meric Inan weighed in with the Gold medal during the Boys Open 100m Breaststroke setting a personal best along the way of 1.18.11, with Liam Thraves,15, also producing a personal best of 1.27.26 for the silver medal and Oliver Ritchie claiming the bronze medal in a time of 1.28.35.

Julie Owen, always up against it to take the 10 year old record of Helen Douthwaite (1.13.25) did the next best thing by winning her third Gold during the very close finish in the Girls Open 100m Breaststroke, when she just touched ahead of Sarah Roberts who finished in 1.21.98, with Julie snatching the Gold medal away from her at the finish in 1.21.03. 13 year old Hannah Broadley won her first medal of the championships by taking the bronze medal in 1.36.70.

Laurence Mills was another trying to break his brother Alistair's 3 year old record of 1.00.80, but the younger sibling was unsuccessful but was pleased with winning the Gold medal during the 100m Backstroke finishing in 1.01.28, with Ross Glegg a hand's length behind in silver place to finish with a personal best of 1.01.67 and the youngest of the Mills' brothers, Gareth Mills ,14, taking the bronze medal in 1.08.11

Winning her 4th Gold medal was Julie Owen in the Girls Open Backstroke recording a personal best time of 1.13.61. With Sarah Roberts adding to her silver medal collection coming home in 1.19.48 and Hannah Broadley seeing off older opposition to win her second bronze in 1.19.61, also a personal best time.

Robert Harvey,14, raced to victory during the boys 14/15yrs 200m IM which he won in a personal best of 2.45.66, with David Mort,14, taking the silver medal in 2.50.45, also a personal best, with Marc Slack, 15, setting personal best of 2.52.23 to win bronze.

Ben Moverley,12, won the 12/13yrs 100m IM in a personal best time of 1.19.25, with Aaron Pattison claiming the silver medal in 1.28.01 (personal best) and Robert Mort also setting a personal best of 1.41.89 to win the bronze medal.

Leanne Lynch's 8 year old record of 1.15.23 was never in any danger when Hannah Broadley won her first Gold medal in a personal best time of 1.18.94, with Rebecca Cox, 12, winning her first silver medal of the championship in 1.22.82, also a personal best, and Amy Hovington swimming a personal best of 1.47.77 to win the bronze medal.
11 year old David Couch swam an excellent swim to easily win the boys 10/11yrs 100m IM to achieve a personal best time of 1.23.54, with Callum Moverley winning the silver in 1.28.85, and Sam Broadley,10, taking the bronze medal in 1.29.88. Samantha Gibson,11, was streets ahead of the others when she won the girls 10/11yrs 100m IM race in a personal best of 1.27.00, with Chloe Pattison also swimming a personal best of 1.33.44 to take home the silver medal and Georgina Rhodes,11, winning her first bronze medal of the competition in yet another personal best time of 1.34.20.

Seven and eight year olds took part in the Boys and Girls 9u 100m IM with 9 year old David Wooley winning with a personal best of 2.13.66 and Simon Stockdale the silver medal in a personal best of 2.23.86. 7 year old Harry Exley-Moore started off his time in Scarborough colours with an excellent win in winning the 100m IM in a time of 2.22.74, beating off the challenge of Aiden Pattison, 2.28.20, PB, and Nathan Kinrade, 7, 2.37.98, PB.

Another Record beater was 9 year old Jace Cappleman who lowered Chloe Pattinson's old record of 1.38.81 which was set last year to the new low of 1.35.16 for the girls 9yrs & Under 100m IM. Niamh Sweeney won the silver medal in 1.36.57 PB, and Imogen Kinrade winning the bronze medal in a PB time of 1.44.32. 8 year old Gold winner was Anna Sweeney setting a PB time of 1.42.43

Club Championship Records continue to tumble with 2 more falling by the wayside during the Open 400m Freestyle - Ross Glegg winning Gold in a PB time of 4.21.66 and taking the old record of Paul Hargreaves, 4.23.10 set in 2005. Ben Moverley,12 did extremely well to win the silver medal (5.10.14) over David Mort, 14 winning bronze in 5.20.39. All swam with personal best times. Julie Owen crushed yet another 2 year old record held by Amii Pettitt who swam 4.52.50, when she swept aside the challenges of Emma Couch, silver, 5.20.26, and Rebecca Cox, 12, 5.26.64, to win gold in the new record time of 4.35.01

Ross Glegg added a further gold to his portfolio when he lowered the 100m Backstroke Gold medal set by Alistair Mills back in 2000 to that of 1.03.57, with Gareth Mills winning silver, 1.06.48, and Meric Inan taking the bronze medal in 1.09.07.
One young lady who showed her excellent potential for the future was 9 year old Jace Cappleman who won all four 9 years and under age group events all in a record time, namely the 25m Breaststroke record of Lauren Finnigan set in 1999 to a new low of 21.08. Again in the 25m Backstroke, which was one of the oldest club records to fall and was set by Shelley Parker back in 1990, with the old time of 21.46 now reduced to 20.18. Another record performance came during the 25m Freestyle, which was secured in 16.26, and finally the 25m Butterfly record was taken in a time of 17.44, shaving off over 2 seconds from the old record set by Niamh Sweeney (19.92) back in 2006 to win the Gold medal.
8 year old sister Anna Sweeney was another pacesetter who succeeded in winning all 4 of her 8 years and under age group events; 25m breaststroke, 23.55, Backstroke, 22.97, Freestyle, 18.77 and the Butterfly in 22.57.
11 year old Samantha Gibson was also another worthy winner of 4 events, and in the 50m Backstroke, she took the 4 year old record of Jessica Craig set in 2002, (39.73) to that of 39.60 and further wins coming in the way of Gold medals in the 50m Freestyle, 33.56, 50m Breaststroke, 45.36, and the 50m Butterfly, 38.75. 13 year old Hannah Broadley was another who achieved a clean sweep of Gold medals in her age group and won the 100m Freestyle, 1.07.31, 50m Backstroke, 36.84, 50m Breaststroke, 45.02 and the 50m Butterfly, 34.72.
9 year old Luke Goodall also won 3 Gold medals, winning the 25m Backstroke, 22.51, Freestyle, 17.66, and the 25m Butterfly, 25.50. 11 year old David Couch almost took all four events but had to settle for the silver medal in the 50m Backstroke, 40.72, but can feel proud of his 3 gold medal wins during the 50m Freestyle, 32.37, 50m Breaststroke, 43.72, and the 50m Butterfly, 36.99. 13 year old Jack Colley also took 3 gold medals in his age group and was just outside the club record when he won the 100m Freestyle in 1.01.88. The 50m Breaststroke followed in 37.96. and finally the 50m Backstroke in 34.80. The two Mill's brothers, Laurence and Gareth, added their names to the club role of honour when Gareth Mills won the Boys 14/15 years 100m Butterfly record and gold medal with a time of 1.02.92, and with Laurence Mills taking the Boys Open 50m Freestyle record which was set by his older brother Alistair in 2004, (25.39) in a time of 25.34.
There were many other fine races with Gold medal winners coming in the form of Simon Stockdale, Jacob Ratcliffe, Anna Sweeney, Hannah Couch, Alex Ingham, Ben Hoggarth, and Tyler Beck, with silver and bronze medal winners; Chloe Pattison, Georgina Rhodes, Rebecca Cox, Harry Exley-Moore, Jay Lee, Sarah Roberts, Ross Glegg, Sam Broadley, Callum Moverley, Aaron Pattison, Hannah Thraves, Amy Hovington, Sam Greenwood-Wilson, Jack Parke, Imogen Kinrade, Alex Ingham, Caitlin MaCallaugh, David Wooley, Morgan Grunwell, Luke Goodall, Emily Harrison, Scott Brierley, Charlie Cowen, Phoebe Smith, Simon Stockdale, Yuko Crawford, David Mort, Emma Couch and Maisey Ratcliffe.
The championships of 2007 go down as one of the most successful in the club's history with the youngest medal winner aged 6, namely Teagan Foster who won the 25m breaststroke in 42.70 and the butterfly in 45.11.
A special mention must be made of all the other medal winners of the novice events with the vast majority setting personal best times: Glen Downes, Harry Brown, Jacob Hird, Jack Parke, Morgan Grunwell, Joseph Pearson, Charlie Cowen, Matthew Harvey, Joe Harrison, Nathan Kinrade, Tyler Beck, Charlie Hopper, Rachel Hartley, Megan Allen, Stephanie Burrows, Danielle Le Masurier, Olivia Butterworth, Alex Houston, Danni Doubtfire, Tilly Grunwell, Nicholas Deller, Molly Stockhill, Beth Goodhall, Charlotte Hagan, Laura Harness, Aiden Pattison.
As with any championships, not everyone can win medals but there were many who achieved personal best times during their events and excellent performances were performed by Marc Slack, Lauren Squires, Jordan Doubtfire, Joshua Hoggarth, Hannah Thraves, Hayley Goodall, Callum Moverley, Sam Broadley, Adam Broadley, Sam Greenwood-Wilson. Hannah Couch.

I will also be putting up the result from the final North Yorkshire league gala and well as reproducing some of next year's main gala dates which will appear on the link provided.

The club AGM on the 6th December went well although the attendance was a little down on recent years. The upshot of the evening was that the club has had a great year with all of its swimmers doing very well. This is down to all of the aspects of the club - from the coaching staff to everyone else who helps make this club the best in Scarborough. Well done to you all.
